Clips from Oddly Compelling: The Denis Kitchen Story
11 months ago – Fri, Apr 04, 2025 at 10:35:18 AM

Hello,

Happy Spring from all of us here at Tinto to all of you!

We’re hard at work on Oddly Compelling, and we can’t wait to share more insight into Denis Kitchen’s legendary career with all of you. In fact, we’ve already revealed some great clips from the documentary. Our pals at Freak Sugar published a fun look at Denis taking a trip to the dispensary in his classic Clenet; Graphic Policy shared some exclusive footage from outside the Cryogenic Institute for Deceased Comix; and Major Spoilers took a look at one of Denis’ trippy augmented reality postcards.

You can also see sneak peeks at some of Kitchen’s incredible collections, which are featured in Oddly Compelling! Head to Smash Pages for a trip into Denis’s basement, which is jam-packed with history, and Comic Crusaders has a closer look at his colossal Big Boy collection.

Denis has done it all, and Oddly Compelling has it all, but don’t take our word for it! Tune into this great episode of Word Balloon to hear Denis in conversation with host John Siuntres! Don’t forget to sign up for the Kickstarter prelaunch page to receive an email when the campaign launches.

If you love comics as much as we do, here are a few other projects we’d love to put on your radar!

The Mask of Haliya is a Young Adult urban fantasy graphic novel inspired by Philippine mythology. Written by Kaitlyn Fajilan, with art from Susan Bin and Vik Caedo, colors by Liz Buenaventura, lettered by Kiela Sibal, and edited by Arielle Jovellanos - The Mask of Haliya Volume 2: Echoes of the Forgotten Past follows Filipina-American teenager Marisol Reyes, as she grapples with the life-changing power of the magical mask she inherited from her great grandmother. The deluxe hardcover is available now on Kickstarter.

THE OMEGA ELEVEN – THE METROPOLIS JOB is the new chapter in the time-traveling comic series from Monstrous Books. Doctor Omega and the Artful Dodger must assemble a team of thieves and rogues, known as amalgams — including the vampire detective Orlock Holmes, mastermind Moriarty Mouse, and Miss Creation the Barbarian Bride — to pull off a number of heists to save the Omniverse from collapse.

"All the fun of a classic Doctor Who adventure, with all the gratuitous violence and adult language you didn't know you needed!" – Sean Von Gorman (The Pedestrian)

Hello Tinto Press Readers!
about 1 year ago – Wed, Feb 26, 2025 at 08:45:47 AM

I’m happy to share an amazing new project with you all. You might have seen the news that I’m working with filmmaker Soren Christiansen to create Oddly Compelling - an all-new documentary about the one and only Denis Kitchen.

https://boingboing.net/2025/02/26/trailer-for-oddly-compelling-explores-the-life-of-comic-artist-and-cbldf-founder-denis-kitchen.html

Between his working as a publisher with Kitchen Sink Press, founding the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and being a prolific cartoonist in his own right, Kitchen is a pivotal figure in the history of American comics. As book bans and challenges to free speech continue to mount, Kitchen and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund have never been more relevant, and we can’t wait to share their story with you.

In collaboration with Tinto Press and Denis Kitchen Archives, the Oddly Compelling Kickstarter will be offering rare Underground Comix, remarqued books, personalized prints, film posters, and original Kitchen art, along with streaming and Blu-ray versions of the documentary.

We have captured hours of in-depth, candid conversations with Denis Kitchen, as well as fellow cartoonists and colleagues including Warren Bernard, Eddie Campbell, Paul Gravett, Karen Green, Justin Hall, Gary Hallgren,Tom Heintjes, MariNaomi, Peter Poplaski, Carol Tyler, and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s Interim Director Jeff Trexler. The film also features rare archival footage of comic book legends Robert Crumb, Will Eisner, and Harvey Kurtzman, along with new animation of Kitchen’s iconic cartooning which I have created.

Sign up on the Kickstarter Prelaunch page to be notified when the Kickstarter launches. This is going to be something special!
